How to Redeem Your GiftYa — A Recipient’s Guide
Whether you want to link a card, generate an eGift code, send the value to your bank via Zelle, swap merchants, or receive a plastic Visa in the mail — here’s how each option works, what changes you can make, and what happens once your GiftYa is fully redeemed.
Start here
Log in at www.giftya.com/login using the phone number the GiftYa was originally sent to. After you verify with the 6‑digit text code, open Received GiftYas and pick the gift you want to redeem. You can change the redemption type as many times as you like until you complete one of the final steps below.
Your redemption options at a glance
Most GiftYa recipients have six ways to redeem. Not every option is available for every merchant or every gift type — the choices that apply to your specific GiftYa will appear after you log in.
| Option | Best for | Fee | Timing |
| Activate (Link a Card) | You already have a U.S. Visa, Mastercard, or Amex you use regularly | No fee | Credit posts after each purchase |
| eGift code | You want a code to use directly with a specific merchant (where supported) | No fee | Usually instant; up to 24 hours |
| Swap merchant | You want a different brand than the one you received | $0.99 | Instant |
| Zelle® to bank | You’d rather have the cash in your bank account | $3.99 | Usually instant; up to 24 hours |
| Plastic Visa by mail | You want a physical card to use anywhere Visa is accepted (U.S.) | No fee | 5–7 business days via USPS |
| ReGift / Pay it forward | You’d like to send the GiftYa on to someone else | $1.95 | Instant |
A quick note on Visa GiftYas
If the GiftYa you received is a Visa GiftYa (the open‑loop product that ships as a plastic card), the Activate / Link a Card and eGift methods are not available — you can either receive the plastic Visa in the mail or swap to a different merchant for a $0.99 fee.
Activate — link a card you already use
Card linking is the most popular option. You connect a U.S.‑issued Visa, Mastercard, or American Express to your GiftYa account, then go shop the way you normally would. There’s no code to remember and nothing to show the cashier.
How it works
- Log in at www.giftya.com/login with the phone number your GiftYa was sent to.
- Open Received GiftYas and select the gift.
- Choose Activate, then add a credit or debit card.
- Shop in store, online, or in the merchant’s app the same way you always would.
- Your card is charged first for the purchase. GiftYa then issues a credit back to that same linked card for the GiftYa amount, until the full gift value has been used.
Heads up — the “charge then credit” flow
This trips up a lot of recipients. When you swipe your linked card at the merchant, you’ll see the full purchase amount come out first. A separate GiftYa credit posts to that same card shortly after — it’s not a duplicate charge and you’re not being double‑billed. Credits continue to post on each subsequent purchase until your GiftYa balance reaches $0.
Why your card may not link
- The card must be a U.S.‑issued Visa, Mastercard, or American Express.
- Prepaid cards cannot be linked — only standard credit or debit cards.
- Check that the card number, expiration date, and billing ZIP code are all entered exactly as they appear on the card.
- If the card still won’t link, try a different eligible card, or change your redemption method — generate an eGift code, transfer via Zelle, or request a plastic Visa by mail instead.
eGift code — a code to use directly
An eGift code is a digital gift card you can use at one specific merchant. You’ll get a card number, PIN, and a barcode or QR code — plus instructions for how to redeem at that merchant.
How to generate an eGift code
- Log in at www.giftya.com/login.
- Open Received GiftYas and pick your gift.
- Choose Generate eGift (or Use as eGift). Some merchants generate the code instantly; others can take up to 24 hours.
- Use the code, PIN, or QR/barcode on the merchant’s website, in their app, or at the register — follow the on‑screen tips for your specific brand.
eGift restrictions and merchant‑specific rules
- eGift codes have a $10 minimum and a $500 maximum per generated code.
- Not every brand supports eGift conversion. If yours is one of these, choose Activate, Zelle, swap, or plastic Visa instead.
- Some merchants are U.S.‑only and will reject codes used from outside the United States.
- After you generate the code, the GiftYa value is locked to that merchant — you can’t switch redemption methods again.
Zelle® — send the funds to your bank
If you’d rather have the cash than a gift card, you can transfer the GiftYa balance straight to a bank account using Zelle. A $3.99 processing fee is deducted from the gift before the transfer is sent.
Before you start
- You need an existing Zelle account — usually through your bank’s app or the Zelle app.
- Have the email address or phone number that is enrolled with your Zelle profile ready.
- Double-check the recipient details before you confirm — Zelle transfers are irreversible. GiftYa cannot recall or reverse a transfer once it’s submitted.
How to send the GiftYa to your bank via Zelle
- Log in at www.giftya.com/login and open Received GiftYas.
- Pick your gift and choose Send to bank via Zelle.
- Enter the email address or phone number tied to your Zelle account, plus your mailing address.
- Review the details — amount, fee, recipient — then confirm. Most transfers are immediate; some require an additional review and may take up to 24 hours.
If a Zelle transfer fails
- If you receive a failure message, the most common causes are a closed or inactive recipient bank account, a typo in the email/phone, or a daily Zelle limit at your bank.
- If funds were debited but didn’t arrive, contact GiftYa Support. Our team can escalate the transfer to the payments specialist and typically provides a status update within one business day.
- If the failure was a Zelle limit issue, try again after midnight when limits reset, or contact your bank to raise the limit.
Swap the merchant, mail a plastic Visa, or ReGift
Swap to a different merchant
If your GiftYa is for a brand you don’t use, you can switch it to a different merchant from the GiftYa catalog. A $0.99 processing fee is deducted from the gift. Log in, choose the gift, select Swap, and pick the new merchant.
Receive a plastic Visa gift card in the mail
Choose Plastic Visa by mail if you’d rather get a physical card you can use anywhere Visa is accepted in the United States. Provide your U.S. mailing address at checkout. Cards ship the next business day via USPS First Class Mail from Pittsburgh, PA and usually arrive within 5–7 business days. There is no tracking number on these envelopes — they’re plain white #10 envelopes, so be sure to check your mailbox carefully. If your card hasn’t arrived after 10 business days, reach out to GiftYa Support and we’ll arrange a replacement.
ReGift / Pay it forward
If the GiftYa isn’t a fit for you, you can pass it along. Log in, pick the gift, choose ReGift, and enter the phone number or email of the new recipient. The original sender’s message is replaced with one from you.
Important: you can’t ReGift back to the sender
Our system blocks self‑gifting and “mirror” gifting where the recipient sends the GiftYa back to the same phone number that bought it. If you no longer want the GiftYa, choose Zelle (sending to your own bank), swap, or contact Support — don’t try to ReGift it to the purchaser.
When is my GiftYa “fully redeemed”?
A GiftYa is considered fully redeemed — and the redemption choice becomes permanent — once any of the following happen:
- You sent the funds via Zelle and the transfer was accepted by the receiving bank.
- You generated an eGift code — even if you haven’t used the code yet, the balance is now tied to that merchant.
- You linked a card, made a purchase, and the GiftYa credit posted back to that card. From that point on the gift continues to draw down on subsequent purchases until it reaches $0.
- You requested a plastic Visa and the order was processed — the card is in production or on its way.
- You ReGifted the GiftYa to someone else.
Once redeemed, the value is gone from your account
After any of the above steps complete, the GiftYa balance is permanently transferred. We cannot reverse a sent Zelle, recall an issued eGift code, undo a credit that has already posted to a linked card, or swap a plastic Visa that has already been mailed. Please pick your option carefully before you confirm.
What can I change before I redeem?
As long as you haven’t completed one of the steps above, you have a lot of flexibility. Log in any time at www.giftya.com/login and from your Received GiftYas you can:
- Switch between Activate, eGift, Zelle, Swap, Plastic Visa, or ReGift as many times as you need to.
- Switch to a different merchant before locking it in with an eGift code (the $0.99 swap fee applies).
- Update the mailing address you plan to use for a plastic Visa.
- Disconnect a linked card and choose a different redemption option — as long as the gift hasn’t been used yet.
- Change the email/phone you’d send a Zelle transfer to (until you confirm the transfer).
Partially used? You still have options
If you started using a linked card but the GiftYa isn’t fully drawn down yet, you can disconnect that card from Account Settings and choose a different redemption option for the remaining balance — subject to the minimums for that option (for example, eGift requires at least $10).
Account access and login troubleshooting
I didn’t get the 6‑digit text code
- Confirm you’re entering the same phone number the gift was sent to — check the original text or email notification.
- On the login screen, choose Resend code. Codes expire after a few minutes; older codes will not work.
- Try a different browser, a private/incognito window, or your phone’s mobile data instead of Wi‑Fi.
- If you have SMS filtering or anti‑spam enabled, allow texts from short codes.
I no longer have the phone number the GiftYa was sent to
For security reasons, only the original purchaser can request that an unredeemed GiftYa be resent to a different phone number or email. If you’re the recipient, ask the person who sent you the gift to:
- Contact GiftYa Support from the email used at checkout, or visit help.giftya.com.
- Include the order number (starts with GYC‑), the original recipient phone, and the new phone number or email.
- Confirm the request — our team will resend the activation link to the new contact information.
If you have a partially redeemed GiftYa (e.g., card already linked, eGift already generated), the original phone number cannot be replaced for security reasons — the remaining balance must continue to redeem to the existing setup.
I see “There was an error retrieving your gift card” or the link doesn’t open
- Try logging in directly at www.giftya.com/login instead of clicking the link in your text or email.
- Open the link in a private/incognito tab to rule out cached data or browser extensions.
- If you previously redeemed the gift, the link may already be retired — the GiftYa now lives in your account history.
- If none of the above work, contact GiftYa Support and we’ll regenerate the link for you.
Refunds: what is and isn’t possible
All GiftYa sales are final once a recipient has interacted with the gift. If a GiftYa hasn’t been opened or redeemed yet, contact Support and we may be able to cancel and refund the order or change the recipient. Once the recipient has redeemed (eGift code generated, card linked and used, Zelle sent, or plastic Visa shipped), we are not able to issue a refund or reroute the gift.
Edge cases and frequently asked questions
“Self‑gifting not supported”
This message means the GiftYa was sent to the same phone number that purchased it. The purchaser needs to log in and resend the gift to a different phone or email — or contact Support to update the recipient.
My linked card was charged but I haven’t seen the GiftYa credit yet
Credits usually post within a few minutes of the purchase clearing. If you don’t see it within 24 hours, log in to verify that your gift status shows “Activated / Linked” and that the purchase merchant and card match. If it still doesn’t appear, contact Support with the transaction date, amount, and merchant.
My eGift code was rejected at the merchant
Confirm you’re entering the code in the merchant’s gift card field (not a promo or coupon field), the PIN is correct, and the merchant is the same brand the eGift was generated for. eGift codes generated through GiftYa for U.S. merchants typically can’t be used internationally.
I want to use the GiftYa at a merchant that isn’t in the list
Use the Activate (Link a Card) option — your linked Visa, Mastercard, or Amex can be used anywhere those networks are accepted, and GiftYa will credit you for purchases at the merchant the gift is for. For other merchants, swap to a different brand or request a plastic Visa.
My Zelle says the recipient’s account isn’t found
Confirm the email or phone you entered matches what the receiving bank has on file for Zelle. If it’s still rejected, the recipient may need to enroll with Zelle through their bank — or you can choose a different redemption method.
Can I receive a GiftYa outside the United States?
GiftYa accounts can be opened from anywhere, but redemption is U.S.‑only — linked cards must be U.S.‑issued, plastic Visas only ship to U.S. mailing addresses, and most merchants restrict eGift codes to U.S. accounts. If you’re outside the U.S., your best options are typically Zelle to a U.S. bank account or ReGift to a U.S. recipient.
